“I’m starving,” Lennon announces as we wander Grand Central district.

We’ve been walking since we left the tattoo shop, getting some much-needed vitamin D, and stopping to browse open stores and cool off in their air conditioning.

“Didn’t you just eat an entire bakery?”

He lets out a huff. “First of all, that was three donuts, three hours ago, and second, do you know how many donuts one can burn through whilst exerting the adrenaline it takes to withstand being tattooed? I have negative donuts right now.”

I laugh. “Well, this blank canvas wouldn’t know so she’ll have to take your word for it.”

Lennon’s expression hardens. “Hey. Nothing about you is blank, just so you know.”

“Well, thank you.”

He stops walking. “Also, Lucas was worthy enough. He was worthy of your love. And that was the greatest honor you could’ve ever given him.”

I nod because if I speak, I’ll come undone.

Lennon starts walking again. “Tattoos are stupid anyway.”

A laugh bursts out of me and I fall back into step beside him. “Yeah, okay. I can absolutely tell that you think so.”

He bumps his shoulder into me as he chuckles. “Seriously though? I need sustenance, like now.”

I lift my chin, motioning down the street. “Wanna go to Casita? If you like tacos…”

He gawks at me. “If I like tacos? Are you kidding?”

I shrug. “I wasn’t sure, because Lucas didn’t really like tacos. Mexican food wasn’t his thing.”

“I know. Such an unnecessary deprivation. I never understood it.”

“All right, then. Casita it is.”

“You’re so easy to be with, ya know,” Lennon says. “Easy to talk to, easy to please. It’s nice.”

I smile. “You’re nice too, Lennon.”

He smiles back. “Today was pretty special. Thanks for sharing it with me. It wouldn’t have been possible without you.”

“It meant more to me than you know,” I say.

He gazes at me a beat longer, like he’s considering my words, and I hate to ruin this moment but I have to know.

“Hey, Lennon?”

“Hmm.”

“Was Lucas really jaywalking?”

Confusion then realization pass over Lennon’s face. “Oh my God, I’m so sorry. I thought you knew that.”

I shake my head.

He sighs and runs a hand through his hair. “Yeah, he crossed without waiting for the signal. According to witnesses and the driver.”

I bite into the side of my cheek until I think I might break it open. “That doesn’t make sense. He never crossed until he had the right of way. He was afraid he’d get in trouble.”

Lennon offers a long shrug. “You said he was running late that morning; he was probably in a hurry.”

My stomach is churning and I have to remind myself to breathe. “I shouldn’t have let him stay up so late the night before. I should’ve made sure he got up on time…”

Lennon stops and grabs my arm, turning me to him. “Don’t you dare, Casey. He was a grown man; he made his own choices. Don’t you ever blame yourself for any of it. Do you hear me?”

I swallow back my nausea. I grasp onto Lennon’s stern request like it’s a life raft, rescuing me from the riptide of guilt.
